Nearly 1.8 million voter registration transactions were recorded over the opening weekend of August, pushing South Africa’s registered voter roll past 29 million ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections. The Presiding Officers framed the registration surge as proof that citizens remain committed to protecting and strengthening South Africa’s constitutional democracy at a moment when democratic participation faces pressures globally.

The Independent Electoral Commission reported that almost 486,000 young people aged 16 to 29 participated during the registration weekend of 1 and 2 August, with 46 percent of all new registrations coming from voters younger than 29. Parliament’s leadership identified this cohort as particularly significant. South African law permits registration from age 16, though voting rights commence at 18.

Beyond raw numbers, the Presiding Officers highlighted the administrative importance of voters updating their residential information. Accurate registration data strengthens the credibility and integrity of local government elections by ensuring voters cast ballots in their correct voting districts, an operational concern that reflects the institutional focus on maintaining a precise and trustworthy voter roll.

Parliament also commended the Electoral Commission’s logistical performance directly, acknowledging the work of more than 48,000 registration staff deployed across the country. The Presiding Officers urged all eligible South Africans who had not yet registered or updated their details to complete the process before the deadline.
