Editorial Standards — Insight Africa Reports

Insight Africa Reports is a regional gazette serving readers across South Africa. Our mission is to inform the public with clear, independent, and responsible journalism. These editorial standards describe the principles and practices we apply to reporting, editing and publishing.

Accuracy and verification

We strive for accuracy in every story. Reporters verify information through independent sources, official records, expert review and first‑hand observation whenever possible. Drafts are edited for factual clarity and consistency; numbers, names, dates and legal terms are checked before publication.

When a claim rests on a single source, or when material is complex or contested, we make that clear in the text. We avoid speculation and are careful with inference. If information comes from social media, video or citizen contributions, we verify provenance, date and authenticity before relying on it.

Sourcing and attribution

We name our sources whenever doing so does not create an unreasonable risk of harm. Sourcing should allow readers to understand where information comes from and to assess its reliability. Public records, court filings, official statements and verifiable documents are preferred. Interviews, expert commentary and local voices are cited with clear attribution.

We do not pay for news content or for access to newsworthy information. Gifts, travel or payments to potential sources that could influence reporting are prohibited unless approved by a senior editor and fully disclosed to readers.

Use of anonymous sources

We rely on anonymous sources only when necessary and with editorial oversight. Anonymity may be granted if a source faces risk of physical harm, legal retaliation, job loss, or other serious consequences for speaking. Editors must approve the use of anonymous sources, document the reasons for granting anonymity, and require corroboration from independent reporting or documentation.

When anonymous sources are used, we explain why anonymity was necessary and provide as much context as possible about the source’s position or knowledge. We do not permit anonymity to shield hearsay or unverified allegations.

Conflicts of interest

Reporters, editors and contributors must avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any potential conflicts to newsroom leadership. Conflicts include, but are not limited to, financial interests, political activity, close personal relationships, or involvement in organisations covered by the site.

Where a staff member’s past or current relationships could reasonably be seen to affect coverage, the staff member will recuse themselves from reporting, editing or commissioning the story. We will disclose relevant conflicts to readers when they bear on the integrity of coverage.

Separation of news and opinion

News reporting and analysis are kept distinct from opinion and commentary. News stories aim to present verified facts and balance perspectives where appropriate. Opinion pieces, editorials and paid columns are clearly labeled as such and placed in sections separate from our news reporting.

Editors ensure that headlines, presentation and placement do not blur the line between reporting and advocacy. Sponsored content and advertising are clearly marked and follow strict labelling standards so readers can distinguish editorial independence from paid material.

Corrections and transparency

We correct errors promptly and transparently. When we discover a significant error, we amend the story, add a correction note explaining what was changed and why, and update metadata where appropriate. Minor edits that do not affect the meaning of a story may be made without a formal correction, but substantive changes are documented.

A public corrections log is maintained and accessible. Readers who believe we have made an error or who have concerns about a story should contact us (see below). We take complaints seriously and will investigate and respond in a timely manner.

Fairness and treating people with dignity

We aim to treat people covered by our reporting with fairness and respect. We seek comment from individuals and organisations prior to publication on matters that affect them, especially where reporting could cause reputational or personal harm. We are sensitive when reporting on victims, minors, and vulnerable communities and follow ethical practices in the use of images and graphic material.

Accountability

If you believe Insight Africa Reports has not met these standards, please let us know. For editorial complaints, contact [email protected] and use our /contact/ form: https://insightafricareports.com/contact/. We will acknowledge receipt and explain the steps we take to review complaints.
