South Africa's Commonwealth Games Delegation Exceeds Medal Targets; Minister Praises 25-Me

SOUTH AFRICA’S MEDAL HAUL AT GLASGOW 2026 COMMONWEALTH GAMES DRAWS MINISTERIAL PRAISE

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has formally acknowledged Team South Africa’s performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where the delegation accumulated 25 medals across the multi-sport competition running through August 2.

The medal count stands at seven gold, nine silver and nine bronze as of Saturday morning, placing South Africa seventh on the overall medal table with competition still underway. Several South African athletes remained in Scotland on Saturday, scheduled to compete through the closing ceremony on Sunday.

McKenzie issued a statement Saturday congratulating athletes and officials on their collective effort. “This team went to Glasgow and did us proud. They have given it their all, and every single one of them comes home having helped to add another proud chapter to South Africa’s sporting history,” the Minister said.

The Commonwealth Games began on July 23 and conclude August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland. A significant portion of Team South Africa’s delegation arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday morning as the event approached its final day. McKenzie was unable to greet the returning athletes in person but conveyed his congratulations through the South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC).

Meanwhile, the Minister directed particular attention to the inspirational dimension of the team’s achievement, speaking to younger South Africans who followed the Games. “To every young South African who watched these Games: these athletes were once just like you, and you can write your own names into the record books if seeing these achievements lit a fire in your belly,” McKenzie stated.

He also highlighted the performance of South African athletes competing with disabilities, specifically naming Nathan Hendricks, Christian Sadie, Danika Vyncke and Masala Makatu. “To every South African living with a disability who saw these athletes on that podium, that was a reminder that the focus of life should never be only on what you cannot do, or what may be denied to you, but rather should be on the many things you can do. By overcoming adversity, you inspire someone else facing their own struggles,” McKenzie said.

The Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture has committed to organizing a formal reception for the complete delegation once all athletes have returned from Glasgow. McKenzie indicated that his office would coordinate the event and that SASCOC would receive further details this week.

The Minister also extended recognition to the support systems behind the athletes’ performance. “I want to thank the coaches, doctors, physiotherapists, technical staff and team management for work that no camera records. And I want to thank the families who sat up through the night watching a child they raised compete under our colours and flag. This belongs to you as much as to them,” McKenzie said.

Whether the planned reception translates into broader policy commitments around athlete development and disability sport remains to be seen once the full delegation is home.
